On September 13th, 2024, our researcher Ana Margarida Mota presented a poster in European Congress of Medical Physics, in Munich, Germany (https://ecmp2024.org/).

With this work we tried to answer the question “is it possible to reduce the dose for children who need to undergo Pediatric renal scintigraphy while keeping the same image quality?”.

A filter based on the mathematical optimization problem for the minimization of a metric called Total Variation was implemented and tested considering the statistical Poisson noise model.
By applying the filter to pediatric renal scintigraphy images with a lower dose, it was possible to achieve equivalent image quality as an image acquired with 100% counts (total dose).

This is a significant advancement in reducing radiation exposure dose in pediatric scintigraphy without compromising diagnostic accuracy.
