In the scope of the research developed at IBEB, in collaboration with other institutions, regarding prostate cancer photothermal therapy, this paper reports the formulation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capable of remaining retained in the tumour and subsequently generating heat after laser irradiation. AuNPs were synthesized and characterized in terms of size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, morphology and photon absorption. The safety and efficacy were assessed using in vitro models. Without laser, AuNPs proved to be safe both in vitro and in vivo. With laser irradiation, they proved to be effective in prostate cancer cells, proving the potential of the formulation for phototermal therapy of this type of cancer.
