Biography

Henrique Vicente Lopes was born in Tavira in 2000 and completed his Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics in July 2024 at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL). He is currently a PhD student at FCUL, conducting research at Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica (IBEB).

Throughout his academic journey, his interests have converged towards the use of programming for medical purposes, particularly in signal and image processing, as well as the application of machine learning methods.

In 2021, he completed a three-month internship at Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica of Instituto Superior Técnico, where he studied electroencephalography correlates of sleep in individuals with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder.

He completed his Master’s dissertation at IBEB, where he focused on the use of artificial intelligence for the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He explored and developed an explainable graph neural network for the diagnosis of ASD using functional connectivity data extracted from functional magnetic resonance imaging. A scientific paper based on this work is currently being prepared for publication.

In September 2024, he began a PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics at FCUL as part of the project “3BAtwin – Bone, Brain, Breast and Axillary Medical Microwave Imaging Twinning” (Reference HORIZON-WIDERA-2023-ACCESS-02-101159623), funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Programme. This project is part of a European consortium aimed at accelerating research in microwave medical imaging, from the laboratory to clinical application, with the development of a microwave imaging medical device designed to combine breast and axillary region images for the detection of breast cancer and the diagnosis of axillary lymph nodes.
