Biography
Afonso Pourfarzaneh, born and raised in Oliveira do Hospital, moved to Lisbon in 2015 to enroll in an Integrated Masters (BSc + MSc) degree in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics, at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, which he concluded in 2022.
To complete his BSc, he did a summer internship with the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, in which he developed a novel concept for 3D-printed variable-stiffness prosthetic sockets, a work that he presented in multiple conferences and resulted in a published paper.
For his masters thesis, he collaborated with the University of Cambridge to develop a lesion localisation tool to improve outcome prediction in Traumatic Brain Injury patients.
In 2022, he started an industry career working as a tech consultant for EY, where he currently acts as a software developer in the Financial Crime sector. Recently, he returned to FCUL to start a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics, supervised by Professor Alexandre Andrade and in collaboration with the Champalimaud Foundation, with the aim of developing a deep learning model to aid in the differential diagnosis of distinct dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia.
