Biography
Mariana Antunes de Oliveira, born in 2000, completed the BSc degree in Engineering Sciences – Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics in 2021, and the MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics, both at the Faculty of Science of the University of Lisbon (FCUL)
In 2021 she interned at Istituto di BioRobotica – Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy, in the context of the European project ADMAIORA, where she researched mechanical properties of nanoparticle-laden hydrogels for joint cartilage regeneration.
Throughout her academic journey, she developed a strong interest in the fields of digital health, innovation and entrepreneurship, which materialized in the creation of a digital therapeutics startup – IMAGI Health – as well as in her activity as Monitor Teacher for Entrepreneurship courses at FCUL, in 2022-2023.
During her master’s, Mariana voluntarily interned at BIOFABICS, where she had the chance to deepen her knowledge on microfluidics and organ-on-a-chip, in a non-academic context.
In 2023, she developed her masters dissertation at CENIMAT | i3N – NOVA School of Science and Technology, where she researched 3D bioprinting of cardiomyocytes for cardiac tissue regeneration. This work awarded her the “Best Pitch” award for thesis at FCUL in 2023.
In late 2024, she was awarded a PhD “non-academic context” fellowship and thus began her doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering and Biophysics at FCUL, stemming from a collaboration with Complear Health, where she’s a research fellow.
Her research focuses on AI-enabled medical devices (AIeMD), in particular in the areas of Usability and Human Factors Engineering, AI Performance, Public Policy and Regulatory Science.
Besides being a research fellow at Complear and a co-founder at IMAGI Health, since 2025 Mariana is also an invited teaching assistant at FCUL. Moreover, she’s a member of the Portuguese Technical Commission 223 for AI Act Standards and she’s a part of the Portuguese delegation at ISO at Joint Working Group ISO/IEC JTC1/SC42 – ISO/TC 215 WG : AI enabled health informatics.
